The Words We Sing

This past week, I attended the memorial service of a woman in her early thirties who left behind her husband and two young children after a courageous fight with cancer. This wasn’t the only death in our circle in the past couple of weeks. Sadly, both sides of our families have faced significant losses. It has been heavy to see the blanket of grief laid upon the shoulders of people we love.

As we drove home from the memorial service we were playing a worship song and I was truly soaking in the lyrics. Often I find myself swept up in the emotion and beauty of worship music, without fully grasping the words I’m singing. Can you relate?

Our time on this earth is tough at times. Loss is painful, and death leaves a void for those of us who remain. It's easy to get caught up in our struggles and lose sight of the God who is sovereign over it all. But as I sat there silently, processing the lyrics that spilled out into the car, I was grateful for my faith. It gives me hope even in my sadness. I don’t have answers to the parts of our life that don’t make sense. But faith is the foundation we need in order to access the peace and hope that God desires to give us.

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. Romans 5:3-5 NLT

Below, I’ve included the lyrics to the song I was listening to and a link if you’d like to hear. I hope, no matter what you’re going through, these words will help you fix your eyes on the one who offers healing, peace, and the comfort our souls long for.

A thousand generations falling down in worship

To sing the song of ages to the Lamb

And all who've gone before us and all who will believe

Will sing the song of ages to the Lamb

Your name is the highest

Your name is the greatest

Your name stands above them all

All thrones and dominions

All powers and positions

Your name stands above them all

And the angels cry, holy

All creation cries, holy

You are lifted high, holy

Holy forever

If you've been forgiven and if you've been redeemеd

Sing the song forever to thе Lamb

If you walk in freedom and if you bear His name

Sing the song forever to the Lamb

Sing the song forever and amen

Hear your people sing, holy

To the King of kings, holy

And You will always be, holy

Holy forever
